Five teams actually braved rain, cold, and the Richmond Marathon to converge on Virginia Commonwealth University for a mirror of Illinois Open 2003: Transfigured Spite entitled Illinois Open East: Alpha and Omega Bowl. After a double round robin and a final to break a tie for first, Maryland A emerged victorious with an overall record of 8-1. Duke was second at 7-2. Southern Virginia, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Maryland B took the remaining spots. Adam Fine of Maryland A received a jellybean dispenser as top scorer, while Matt Schneller of Duke will receive an unwieldy trophy designating the bearer as a 2002 CBI Nationals All Star for leading the field in negs. Full SQBS reports will be available by tomorrow night. I wish to thank Illinois and all the people who submitted packets for putting together a superbly edited set; while the answer selection was quite difficult at times, the construction and quality of the clues was the best I've ever seen outside of ACF Nationals. I would also like to thank all the teams for taking a risk on a first-time tournament host, and especially West Virginia Wesleyan for essentially making the tournament possible by providing a laptop and three staffers. Also, I will add my voice to the chorus of praise for Chris Sewell. This is my first time actually running SQBS myself, and it completely exceeded my expectations for ease of use and thoroughness of reports. If you'd like packets, contact the Illinois Open home office at UIUC. Encouraged by the smooth operation of today's tournament, VCU will be hosting its own low-difficulty packet-submission event at some point in the spring semester; contact me at mattweiner at hsquizbowl.org if you want to be on our mailing list for this event.
