Let's also consider the fact that we are no where contractually bounded to anything (NAQT excepted). It's not as if a professional sports team doesn't show up for a game. The fact that we even pay entry fees to clubs to play in a tournament is something done on integrity and has become expectation. Of course you wouldn't invite anyone back if they didn't pay. I'm sure you can ask any TD at any school to speak of a time they became frustrated with a cancellation. Once or twice did I enjoy 8-team tournaments with quadruple round robins with 3-4 house teams at CAL. Lets put things in perspective too - this is Quiz Bowl - some people are married to it, others do it for sheer enjoyment and there's some middle ground. Unfortunately there is not the cross-the-board "hardcore" dedication that some would like to see. If you have a team of undergraduates and the one person who has a car can't go or the one grad student who has a car can't go then essentially you can count on missing it. I have to deal with this crap in the high school tournaments I run also and yeah it pisses me off. But yeah maybe if a team gets the flu and has to cancel a few days before we should charge a cancellation fee. You get the point. Ross the Albanian
