Thanks to all 18 teams that participated in Saturday's 5th annual spring break Sun 'n Fun Quiz-in at the University of South Florida. I really appreciate everyone coming and hope you had a good time. I know I did. It was impressive, as always, to see the high caliber of players, and hopefully, the the novice players were inspired to reach greater heights themselves. USF fielded a couple of house teams in order to fill out the brackets, and the USF-A team ended up winning the tournament. As Chip Thomas got on a roll, USF-A upset mighty UF-A with Raj Dhuwalia (and his gaudy 125+ ppg average, which earned him tournament MVP honors) in the semifinals, and then upset talented UF-B with Kevin Comer and John Allan in the finals. Surprising Stetson was the other semifinalist. This marks the first time USF has ever won one of its own tournaments. I don't know if it's considered poor form to do this. Hopefully, you will tell me privately if you think it is. I figure, if you can get a little experience in for your team, why not go for it. We don't have a huge budget to attend many events, and if there's an opportunity to play while still having adequate staff to the run your tournament, then you might as well let your team play. Of course, safeguarding the integrity of the questions is paramount, and I take this very seriously. Having said all this, I was proud of our team. Rob Fernandez and Scott Pierce also played great, as did Peter Kahn on the USF-B team. When I think back five years ago to when there was no QB team at USF, I'm very happy with our progress to date. Other tournament notes... Editing...let me beat up on myself a bit here. IMO, there were too many repeats. And, I think the level of questions was not very uniform. I can only attribute this to the fact that I got all but two of our 12 packets in the last five days before the tournament. If I had had additional time, I probably could have culled through them better to eliminate typos, impossibly hard Q's, and such. I won't go into any of the specifics right now, as Iowa is hosting a mirror of SNF this Saturday using our packets (Andrew, I will contact you with the few corrections I can think of right off the bat, but I encourage you to skim through the packets yourself as well before your tourney). Beer Bowl IV...did not happen. Although Rob had interest from several teams, he did not receive any packets, which for a packet submission tournament, is pretty much the most important thing. Rob says to stay tuned for a possible BB4 date in MAY. Thanks to...Scott, Nap, Ahmad, Rob, Steve, Jay, Nick, Raj, Aaron Layton, John Mathews, Dorothy Dunlap, Lena Phelps, Chris Borglum, Kevin Bush, and everyone else who helped in the tournament. Scott should post final tournament stats in the next couple of days. Jeremy Rasmussen Quiz Bowl at USF http://ctr.usf.edu/quizbowl
