For those on this list who are involved at the high school level, or to pass along to anyone you know who may be interested... This is to announce the 7th annual Trevor's Trivia: Bob Selcer Memorial High School Quizbowl, hosted by the Academic/Trivia Association of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. This will be a one-day tournament Sat., Oct. 9, 2004. SCHEDULE: Registration will begin at 9 AM EDT on Sat. 10/9, with announcements at 9:45 and play starting at 10. While a precise schedule won't be available until we verify the size of the field, we hope to finish the main body of the tournament by 5:30 PM and the playoffs by 8 PM. LOCATION: The tournament headquarters will be held on the UTC campus in Chattanooga. Unfortunately, due to some changes in procedures at UTC, we have not been able to confirm which of two possible buildings will serve as tournament HQ. (This is the reason this announcement is so late in going out -- our apologies for the inconvenience.) We hope to be in room 201 (Card Family Auditorium) of the Engineering, Math, and Computer Science Bldg., but if not, it will be in 129 Grote Hall. We will update you when we get it straightened out, but just in case, the directions below include both locations. FORMAT: This will be an untimed tournament, 20 tossups and 20 bonuses per round, with no bounceback on bonuses. Questions will cover a variety of academic disciplines, with a little popular culture and general knowledge thrown in. The field will be split into brackets for a round robin, followed by playoffs for each division (see below.) During playoffs, non-playoff teams will have the option of playing consolation rounds. Grades 7-12 are eligible. Separate trophies will be awarded for teams in Division II (teams composed entirely of players in grades 7- 10), although Division II teams may still play matches against Division I teams. There will be separate All-Star awards for players in grades 7-10, even if they're on a Division I team. FEES AND PAPERWORK: Tournament fees are as follows -- · Base fee: $65 per team (4 players can play at a time with up to 3 alternates; substitutions are allowed between rounds only.) · $5 discount for each additional team from the same school · $5 discount for a working lockout buzzer system Bring extra buzzer systems if you can; if we need them we'll knock another $5 off your fees. After the tournament, complete sets of questions may be purchased for $15. Pre-registration and prepayment are not required; we just need to know how many teams you'll bring, and in which divisions. Rosters may be changed at any time before the tournament starts, but once it does, a player may not switch from team to team. ACCOMMODATIONS: There are a limited number of discounted rooms available at the Clarion Hotel downtown for Friday 10/8 and/or Sat. 10/9 at $66/night. The Clarion number is (423) 756-5150; tell them you're with the UTC quizbowl tournament. DIRECTIONS: Come towards downtown Chattanooga on I-24. Take the freeway splitoff labeled US 27 North - Downtown Chattanooga. Follow US 27 North to Exit 1A, 4th St. (Don't worry about which way to turn on 4th St. - it only goes one way.) Follow 4th St.about ½ mile. Shortly after you see the McKenzie (UTC) Arena on your right, 4th St. will bear slightly left and merge with 3rd St. Once you pass the cemetery on your right, turn at the 2nd street to the right, Palmetto St. Assuming we get the EMCS building: In the second block on your right, you'll see the EMCS Building. Go to the breezeway and take the door on its right side. Card Famiy Auditorium is just inside that door on your left. If we go to Grote Hall instead: Go past the EMCS Bldg. and take the next right onto Vine St. Follow it to the last available parking lot on your right before the road is closed. Grote is the building closest to that parking lot. Enter at the back door by the dumpster; tournament HQ would be Grote 129. CONTACT: That would be your genial quizmaster, Charlie Steinhice, the UTC A.T.A. coach. If you have any questions, I can be reached at steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net.
