Hello all. I am here outlining a tentative team list, a revised fee structure, clarified eligibility rules, a gameplay rule and a policy regarding negative actions or comments. Teams Simon Fraser University (1 confirmed, probably more) University of British Columbia (none confirmed as of yet) Bruce Lin et al (confirmed) Other than that, the fee structure remains mostly the same as it was. I'm adding a little more to the discounts: $15 per team $7 off for a full pack received by Ben Smith at Ottawa by February 19th. $5 off for a half pack by that same date. $5 off for a full pack received by Ben by February 26th. $3 off for a half pack by that same date. $3 off for a full pack received by Ben by March 5th. $2 off for a half pack by that same date. $7 off for a working buzzer system. $7 off for a full-time moderator or scorekeeper. $3 off for a rotating moderator or scorekeeper. $5 off for teams that have not played a tournament in British Columbia since March 1st, 2004. To qualify for this discount, at least three-quarters of the players on a team must not have played in a tournament held in BC since that date. This discount will not apply to teams that are determined to be geographically closer to the University of Ottawa than to the University of British Columbia. This discount applies to every team meeting the above requirements, so an institution sending multiple teams can qualify for this discount with each team. Fees are in either US or Canadian dollars -- whichever the team has handy. There will not be a currency exchange at this tournament. The minimum fee remains $0 per team; as before, I reserve the right to lower teams' fees for other reasons as I see fit. In particular, teams meeting requirements for $7 discounts will likely see their fees lowered beyond that. Again, this tournament is open to everyone who did not play at the OHT or is affiliated with an institution that fielded a team at the OHT, provided that they are either of the age of majority or affiliated with a post-secondary institution. People not satisfying either of the latter requirements may e-mail me at dpareja -at- interchange -dot- ubc -dot- ca to request permission to play. As for gameplay, full TRASH-style laming rules, as at Ottawa, will be used in Vancouver. The tournament director reserves the right to expel players from the tournament for what I judge to be excessive negative criticism of the TD or other players or moderators. However, I welcome constructive criticism of my TDing, given that it is my first tournament at which I am TD. Players will be appropriately warned multiple times before I resort to expulsion. A team that has a member expelled may not play with more than 3 players (or one fewer player than it had playing when it had the most players playing) until it has heard 20 tossups playing short. Once a player has been expelled he or she may not play any more games at the tournament and will be expected to moderate for the remainder of the tournament. Teams with players refusing to comply with this policy may be charged extra fees and/or have discounts taken away at my discretion. I will only use expulsion as a last resort if I feel that a player will not respond to anything less harsh (or has not responded to anything less harsh) up to and including suspension from playing for a period of 20 tossups during which their team may not bring in a substitute. Players will only begin to accumulate warnings at the pre- tournament all-team meeting. Although I am loath to expel a full-time moderator, this policy also applies to full-time moderators who exhibit negative attitudes towards players or teams. Moderators may issue warnings in accordance with this policy; all such warnings issued must be reported to me at the end of each round. Anyone wishing clarification of this policy, or anything else in this announcement, can e-mail me. Daniel Pareja (dpareja -at- interchange -dot- ubc -dot- ca) University of British Columbia Quiz Bowl
