I've worked with Quiz Bowl in Arkansas for over ten years, i just "retired" last year, and they started the camp for our players about three years ago, designed to give you scrimmage opportunities against players from other schools that you may play in subsequent tournaments, and giving you material to learn. It is very good to buy any reference books that you can, particularly almanacs and anthologies. From that point, the main concept that really helped my teams out, especially in the last three years, make sure that your players are specialized. I've played several one-man teams in my years, so its important that one person know a subject so well they could write several books on it, while others know some information to fill in gaps. To address you AP courses issue, especially in our region of the country, is still up and coming, and if pushed for, will come to fruition, but you can have a non-existent program and still beat the top programs. If you have more concerns about study tactics or the game in general, feel free to contact me at simsda_at_..., and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. I hope this has helped a little. Dan Sims Christopher Johnson <aeteacher_at_...> wrote: I need some help.... I coach a high school team in NE Mississippi and we do very well locally (3rd in our state this year and 1st in our NE region) and this year we did OK in some tournaments in Arkansas, LA, and Tenn... but we always lost to some schools that had sent their kids to "camp". What exactly is done at these camps? Are they drilled with facts and whatnot? I'm trying to get something organized. We're very interested in getting stronger in the competitions we attend but we're at a disadvantage because our school doesn't offer AP courses like most. Any other ideas of things I can do to help such as books or good study guides or materials? We already have some NAQT questions to practice with and the "Champions Quiz" study guides which have helped some. Thanks.
