I'm with Nathan in that my basic attitude towards tournaments is the more rounds the better. I much prefer a two day tournament with 18 rounds to a one day one with 12. A three day tournament with 28 rounds would be better yet! (Though probably too much for a host and packet editors, so I don't ever expect to see it.) If a tournament must be one day only, I still prefer as many rounds as can be managed -- I think about the maximum for a one day affair is 17-18 rounds, realistically: 9 am to 7 pm-ish, with a lunch break, half an hour per round scheduling -- though if you're going to have 18 rounds, I'd _rather_ it were 6 on Friday night and then 12 on Saturday. But all 18 on Saturday is better than simply 12 on Saturday and that's it. In particular, if we're driving far, or flying, I want as many rounds as possible. A little 12 round tournament is fine if we're not driving more than 3-4 hours for it tops, but for a longer trip, if that's all we'll be getting I'm not likely to think it's worth the time or money, and I'll choose to go somewhere else instead that'll give more rounds. (As an aside, while I don't know how many rounds ACF Nationals will wind up being, I was rather disappointed to read on the qb list today that it was shrinking down to a one day tournament, with a promise to keep the number of rounds to "a reasonable level for a one day tournament." One day tournaments are fine for small "local" events that nobody is travelling very far to get to, but not very appropriate IMO for a would-be national tournament that wants to draw teams flying in from afar. If it has to be one day only, I'd rather have it be an "unreasonable" number of rounds that day!) Eric Hillemann Carleton coach
