As a sidelight of the mailing list issues, our club's activity has increased tremendously, well over 100 members log in daily. Checking all of the larger clubs in the Yahoo Games hierarchy, it seems our members are the most regular daily users of the service. (More members log in here than in clubs 12 times our size) Quizbowl rules! Now, back to the issue at hand, R. wears several hats: NAQT Ringmaster and QB-LIST Moderator. So long as one doesn't interfere with the other, and everyone knows his roles, there is no ethical problem. As a responsible individual, he will be more objective in his role as moderator, bending over backwards to avoid perception of bias, which observers would quickly detect. However, I agree with the point about the domain the list is coming from. While it may seem inconsequential now, the argument about CBCI is potent. I would encourage R. to use a more neutral domain while wearing the hat of QB-LIST moderator. The job is a major headache, requiring the periodic fending off of spam attacks and the like, and R. should be thoroughly praised for the excellent job he has done. Furthermore, he must read everyone's post, regardless of its quality. When I started this club, it had several purposes, and it has succeeded in them beyond my expectations. But one purpose may be less apparent than the others, reducing the flow of email into my inbox. In my view, qb channels of communication should be separated: Important and Urgent - QB-LIST email Important but not urgent - Yahoo! newsgroup Urgent but not important - QB-CHAT email Neither important nor urgent - Some other newsgroup Further, Quizbowl may not be a matter of life and death, but I would suggest most of the people here care about and value it. Some standards of conduct in posting are appropriate. Think before you post, and respect that others posting have something of value to say, even if you disagree. -- dml
