Twenty-two teams plus two Masters exhibition teams played at this year's ACF Nationals at the University of Maryland, College Park. The teams were divided into two brackets of twelve, and played twelve prelim rounds. Then the Masters teams dropped out, and then the top four, next four, and bottom three played matches against corresponding teams in the opposite bracket. The three (or two) games against your bracket carried into the playoffs. Overall records were wiped out, except they were used as the first tiebreaker to resolve a circle-of-death, ahead of head-to-head point differential. A final could only occur if two teams tied with the same record. Of course, this happened: *. Illinois (6-1) they beat Chicago A, but lost to Michigan A *. Chicago A (6-1) 3. Harvard (5-2) 4. Virginia (3-4, 10-4 overall) 5. Princeton Sic (3-4, 9-5 overall, beat Michigan A) 6. Michigan A (3-4, 9-5) 7. Cornell (1-6, beat UMCP) 8. UMCP (1-6) Chicago then played Illinois in the final, and won 305-155. Congratulations to Chicago on its second consecutive ACF National championship. All-star awards were given after the prelim matches to the top four scorers: 1. Andrew Yaphe, Chicago A 2. John Kenney, Virginia 3. Jeff Hoppes, Princeton Sic 4. Roger Bhan, Wash U. St. Louis A In addition, Dr. Carol Guthrie won the second annual Gordon Carper Award (which I believe is given by ACF to a recipient for outstanding lifetime service to academic competition). Full results and stats will be posted to the QB list by David Hamilton sometime in the next few days, after he recovers. Adam Fine
