You bring up very valid points here which I'm under obligation to address for being partly responsible for this system. "I don't mind the idea of gamesmanship and strategy (i.e. timed formats, bonus laming), but the reason I play at tournaments is to answer questions and see how my team can fare against other teams on the question material." As a team we felt that we needed something different for our trash tournament. Granted, different isn't always good but we felt this idea was interesting and it wouldn't hurt to try (at least we sure hope it won't). Besides, trash tournaments have always been a little questionable in terms of question material, as "FTP, buzz in now" (who says that isn't similar to a "wizard" ability?) and similar physical challenges have demonstrated in the past. "it seems to me that playing shorthanded would be more of a disadvantage under this system." You are absolutely right and this is something we'll have a simple answer for by the end of the week. "As for the comment that "all in all, you shall drive home from this tourney bitter and angry at your teammates...Hurrah!",...Either I'm misreading you or I have a philisophical disagreement with that statement." It was a tongue-in-cheek statement although in retrospect I should have worded it differently. "if I should be behind the times, maybe I should just spend the quizbowl portion of my free time on other events." You aren't behind the times. This is probably a one-time deal and we probably won't be seeing this ever again after this weekend. But that doesn't mean we're not going to try it out. Any other feedback is appreciated.
