Hello-- I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that the Publius Open, a summer masters tournament, will be held at MIT on Saturday, July 22. The questions will be written by me and by Josh Miller; eligibility will be open to all. The registration fee will be $95 a team, minus $5 for a buzzer system. The tournament will be modified ACF--mostly academic, that is, but with some current events and pop culture. As to difficulty, we'll aim for a level around that of ACF regionals. Our plan is to make sure that almost every tossup will be answerable in almost every room, though we'll assume (since this is a masters event) that the average team will be somewhat better than the average team during the year. We'll send details about the format to interested teams at a later date. Josh and I plan to write 15 packets; we'll come up with a format that uses most or all of them, probably a round robin with bracketed playoffs or a double round robin. For those of you who don't know us, I'm a 1999 Swarthmore alum who'll begin a Ph.D. program in history at the University of Chicago this fall; Josh is a senior at Swarthmore. We're both former presidents of the Swarthmore team, and between the two of us we've edited seven tournaments or so. If you have any questions, would like to register, or might be interested in hosting a mirror, email me at edwardcohn_at_... or Josh at jmiller_at_.... If you'd like to come but don't have a team, let us know and we'll try to match you up with some other players. Thanks a lot! We hope to hear from you soon, and to see you on July 22! --Edward Cohn
