Why? I would love to be able to sleep late instead of getting up at 7:30 or earlier for a tournament (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). It promotes a relaxed environment and may lead to better efficiency as the director may be better-rested and more alert. A tournament shouldn't be held simply to finish on time anyway. That should be a positive and logical consequence of a good tournament. What difference does it make if it runs late anyway? Ask yourself, "Is my time really that precious that I need to give a damn?" Jason, must respectfully disagree with you here. A tournament that starts in the afternoon will run into the late evening at best, if it runs on time, which invariably, 75% or more of tournaments seem not to. Couple this with the distance that a significant number of teams/people drive to partake in these events, and it is a much better idea to have a morning start that allows for an early evening departure than it is to push back the start, which pushes back the finish, which pushes back the departure. For many of us, our time is that valuable, we have to get back for classes, to work on projects, or in some frightening cases, real life. A tournament should run on time because it serves the customer better. One should give a damn about a tournament running on time because either you want to serve your customer to the best of your abilities and have them realize that you consider their time to be important or because you feel that as a customer, the provider of the service, in this case the tournament, should have a feel for the logisitcal constraints of running said tournament.
