Tobacco Bowl v1.1 was just completed on the campus of Duke University. After much confusion, it was figured out that there were seven teams playing: North Carolina A North Carolina B George Mason George Washington Furman Wake Forest And a house team The house team contained on it Julie Singer as well as Shaun Hayeslip of Maryland (who stayed for the first of two RRs). Therefore, it was declared an exhibition team. As inferred before, the tournament was a double-RR. It was decided that if there was a tie, the two teams tied would square off for a one-game final. If there wasn't a tie for first, the first-place team would be declared the winner outright. Of course, this is the house team notwithstanding; led by the superpower of Julie, they swept the tournament. :) The final results of the double round-robin were: 1. Duke 12-0 2. North Carolina A 8-4 3. Furman 8-4 4. George Washington 8-4 5. George Mason 3-9 6. North Carolina B 2-10 7. Wake Forest 1-11 As you can see, we had a small problem. THREE teams tied for "first". On top of that, UNC swept Furman, who swept GW, who swept UNC. So things were looking ugly when I realized something: there were few enough people on the three teams put together that we could squeeze them onto one buzzer system. None of the teams had a problem with it, so a three-way final erupted. After 20 questions, Furman and George Washington each had 130, and North Carolina A had 75. The final tossup was snagged by Furman, allowing them to win the first ever Tobacco Bowl! So, congratulations to Ian Jeffress, Michael Precht, and Tricia Southard for winning Tobacco Bowl v1.1. Congrats also to Edmund Schluessel, who WAS George Washington and darn near won the whole thing by himself. All-Stars were Julie Singer of Duke, Edmund Schluessel of George Washington, Ian Jeffress of Furman, and Ryan Ong of North Carolina A. More complete individual and team stats will be handled by my colleagues soon. I want to thank everyone who came out to play. I want to thank the people at Duke who showed up: players Julie Singer, Mike Miller, and Valerie Ogonor; and fellow officials Darren Abernethy, David Mermin, John Massari, and Andrew Feist. And now, dinner is arriving and I gotta eat, then get ready for a pool shootin session with David and Julie later on. Comments about it from those who were there (positive and negative) would be nice... y'all know my email. YALL COME BACK NOW YHEAR? Andy Goss Duke Academic Team
