>>Matt, I regret that the use of the Holst question on February 20 Questions has so offended, and I'll remove it immediately. -- Chip Beall << The removal of the question confirms your identity. Of course, that handle joined this club months ago, so now that we know it actually does belong to you, we know that you've seen the earlier posts on this subject as well. You knew that taking this question was not proper, as you should have known before you did this the first time. I should not have to be telling someone 28 years my senior that plagiarism is legally and morally wrong, but your repeated and flagrant actions leave me no choice. Furthermore, there is the matter of compensation for the original writers of the lifted questions. Particularly for those sold in tournament sets or used on QuizNet, where a direct fee is paid, some share should be paid to the individuals, clubs, and tournaments whose work produced the questions. I assume that there is a purpose to running the Twenty Questions contest, namely promotion of other activities from which money is made, so questions used there should also be subject to this compensation. I await the legal scholars' weighing in on what fair compensation might be. I do not need them to know that removing this one question does not remove your potential legal liability for violating copyright in the past. At this point, I for one do not consider this matter closed or your actions atoned. Once we get this sorted out (i.e., once you hand over money to everyone from whom you stole, and apologize profusely to each one personally as well as to the quizbowl community as a whole on this forum) we can begin discussing the other flaws in your operation. --M.W.
