<<The things you list are EXACTLY the kinds of problems that got the circuit started in the first place. They are what happens when a quiz bowl tournament is run by people not familiar with quiz bowl. In the mid 80's (yep, I'm an old-timer), quiz bowl players realized that they could do the same thing, only BETTER, by concentrating on what the players and teams want to produce fairer, better competitions.>> I should point out that, at least in the regions which I have seen (7 and 8), these people DO care about putting on a good tournament. And they try their damn hardest. They are in awe of the abilities of even those non-circuit teams which most of you look down upon. The people who run these tournaments are most familiar with sports as a template for running a tournament: NFL scheduling, single elimination playoffs, etc. Rather than claiming to know all with the ego of experience, it might be better to make analogies to sports if you wish to offer constructive criticism of formats. And, for those of you whose teams control the IM tournaments, do you invite your eventual institutional representative to take part? As for the lower bracket winner making the semis, it reminds me a bit of relegation in soccer. Not that I think it's entirely fair, although I have tried to think up fair formats which would involve relegation games.
