(Keeping Kenny's "beware of trolls" comments in mind, I'll note that I may be falling for one. But anyway....) "And I wasn't around when this CBI thing happened, but it seems to me that if CBI said the winner of their tournament would go to England and then changed their mind when they found out a team they didn't like had won the tournament, I'd be pissed off myself. Kind of like the Masters saying 'Well, we were going to give the winner a million bucks, but we don't really like Tiger's attitude this year, so we've changed our minds. Phil Mickelson, this is your lucky day.'" This mischaracterizes what actually happened. To use the (overworn) golf analogy, it would be more like: PGA: "Here, Tiger, you won." Tiger: "No way, dude, this tournament sucked so bad that I renounce having ever won it." PGA: "Well, okay. I guess you don't get the $1,000,000 check, then...." Tiger: "Hey, wait!" Specifically, CBI didn't "change their mind when they found out a team they didn't like had won the tournament" -- they changed their mind when the team that won the tournament decided that they didn't want to be the tournament winners anymore. Big difference, IMO. OTOH, you seem to be saying that Yaphe and Tiger are both jerks; I won't go that far, but the "sainted martyr and role model to millions of quizbowlers" tag doesn't stick well to Andrew either. Andrew's history with the game reads more like a John McEnroe than a Tiger Woods -- talented, outspoken, opinionated and very temperamental. phil And now I'll shut up again.
