Simply in the interests of clarity, the following happened, more or less - U.Va. won the CBI championship in 1998 and were told that as champion they would compete against the University Challenge champion in Britain. Andrew posted to the newsgroup that the team had not enjoyed the tournament and did not intend to participate the following year. CBI notified the team that they had "renounced" their title. UVa's coach, Clay Davenport, informed CBI that the team had not this and would simply not be competing the following year. CBI did not respond. Several months later CBI announced that the BBC had requested that "All Star" teams from the two competitions compete instead of the winning schools. Putting this in the form of the golf analogy: Tiger Woods: I did not like the course at Augusta National. I will not be playing in the Masters next year. Augusta National: You, Tiger Woods, renounced your championship next year, therefore we will not pay your winner's fee. Tiger: I did not renounce this year's championship. Augusta National: (silence) 5 months later Augusta National: CBS has decided that the winner's fee for last year's tournament should be divided among those players who showed the best spirit of competition. All of which really does not matter at this point. So what this have to do with the fact that Andrew is a wonderful player? I don't know. I'm amazed at Andrew's accomplishment as well as the depth of Michigan's teams. And Kevin Olmstead won lots of money! I think we should be happy at their good fortune. Brian Rostron
