(Speaking only for myself and not for any company or team I am associated with. All of my opinions belong to me.) Let me chip in from the fringe here on ACF, because I think a lot of positive things can come from this discussion. I think the key is this, any "format" of quiz bowl is good, if only because it allows another oppurtunity for people to play and play what they like and best suits them. I never played in an ACF tournament while at Michigan, but I also understood that there are people who love ACF because it represents what quiz bowl means to them. You know what, it was a pretty workable solution. It's a really simple notion folks. If you don't like it, don't play it. And if you don't play it, don't complain about it. No one has the divine right to rant about a format because of its past, no one has the divine right to moan about a format because it exists. The fact of the matter is, someone, out there, obviously is playing it, or it wouldn't exist. Now, can we make suggestions on how to improve things, absolutely. But, there are productive and non-productive ways to do this. ACF, as a whole, seems committed to maintaining its ideals while at the same time increasing its participatory base. It seems only fair to give them a shot, give them input, and if things don't play out to your liking, either suggest to them ways to improve, or shut you yap and don't go back. And if things do not change to your liking, don't assume they don't care, there could very well be a reason for what they do. In the end, all of us, I would hope, want a large and viable circuit. Why undercut ourselves for the sake of looking like the all-knowing. There are ways to improve things via critque that are far more effective. OK, I am done ranting for niceness for now. I know if will go unheeded, but I have to do it every so often. CDB
