FOIST director Andy wrote: "Okay, first and foremost, the winner of the consolation bracket was Adam Fine, who played very well and won every match he was in... except the all-important Round 2, where he finished last." Thank you for the compliment, Andy, though some of my Round 2 biscuitry was simply due to choking (perhaps if I ever play a future trash singles tournament, I'll play as Phil Mickelson) :P Nonetheless, I never understood why Round 1 means so little in the Hillemann format. Why can't you simply take the total of the scores in the first two rounds, while maintaining the change of rooms between rounds to allow for variety of opponents? There were no "knock-outs" at FOIST for reaching a certain score early, but if there were, and a player were to reach the knock-out level both times, then you can take the average of the question points at which that player hit knock-out. Otherwise, though Round 3 can alter seeding, really Round 2 becomes one long single-elim game. I thought the FOIST questions were decent, particularly since they came from one player, and obviously took significant effort. One notable criticism, though: I thought in a decent number of questions the power mark was too late ("Titanic" was probably the most blatant). But Round 2 notwithstanding, I had fun. -Adam
