UTC will host a one-day trash tournament in Chattanooga on Sun, Oct.21, 2001. The Big Lots Clearance Open will be a mirror of Foghat at Rolla -- meaning (to paraphrase Phil Collins) NO PACKET REQUIRED. Questions are being written and edited by Jeremy White with the assistance of Ben Lea. TIME & PLACE: Start time is Sun., 10/21, with registration beginning at 9:00 AM, announcements at 9:45, and play beginning at 10 AM. When will we finish? Depends on how many teams we have, but we hope to be out of there by 8 PM at the latest. Tournament headquarters? Start at Grote 129 on the UTC campus. Unless we have a bigger field than expected, though, we'll probably hold the entire tournament in nearby Holt Hall. ELIGIBILITY: If you want to play, and you tell me in time, you're in. School level, status, etc. are totally irrelevant. Opposable thumb recommended but not required. FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Teams will be four players each, with alternates OK as long as there are no substitutions in mid-match. Depending on the number of teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round robin. This of course means I need to know the number of teams in advance. FREE AGENTS: If you want to attend but don't have teammates, let me know. Or if you have a partial team and are looking for reinforcements, do the same. Any folks like this, I'll put you in touch with each other and let you sort it out. PACKETS Let me repeat -- there is no packet submission for this tournament. So you were really, really hoping for a packet discount? Well, UTC could use some more original high school questions for our upcoming Trevor's Trivia/Selcer Memorial tournament. So you can get your team a whopping $15 discount if you send me a round of (academic) high school questions (23 tossups, 23 boni) before Oct. 6. [Note: high school teams competing in Trevor's Trivia would not be eligible to make this deal.] FEES: Base fee $90 per team Discounts: $10 for an experienced reader (*or* said reader can join us for dinner at Provino's after the Moon Pie Classic Sat. night 10/20 if they'd prefer) $5 for a working buzzer (additional $5 for a second buzzer if it turns out we need it) $20 for writing us a high school packet (see above; must arrange in advance) LODGINGS: We'd already arranged with the Clarion Hotel for discount rooms for COTKU as well, for those of you who want to stay as close as possible to the campus. The Clarion is holding a fairly small block of rooms for us for Friday night 10/19 and/or Saturday night 10/20 at the rate of $65 per night plus tax for up to 4 people. This is a fine facility within 5 minutes of the University, and within walking distance of the major Chattanooga tourist sites as well as the Bijou (downtown movie complex with midnight shows on the weekends.) The Clarion's number is (423) 756-5150; tell 'em you're with the Academic Trivia quizbowl tournament and are entitled to the special rate. DIRECTIONS: E-mail me at steinhic_at_... if you need directions. WHO'S IN CHARGE HERE: Tournament director will be Charlie Steinhice. What were the odds?
