Just so people know, the speech that Andy posted is actually from 1973, another very tough year for being American. Sinclair wrote this at a time of great anti-American feeling, and the message resonated. Byron MacGregor, a Windsor/Detroit* newsman, read the editorial on his #1 rated station at the time, CKLW, along with some patriotic music. A record company then released MacGregor's version in January of 1974, which reached #4 in the U.S. Sinclair's version was also released stateside, which reached #24. There was a time in 1974 where both "songs" were in the Billboard Top 40. MacGregor's version was rerelased in 1991, but it did not chart. It's nice to have a lot of back issues of Billboard at work. MacGregor eventually became a TV anchor for a Detroit station.
