<<The left has not held a monopoly on stupidity during all this. Equally reprehensible was Ann Coulter's assertion that we should invade Muslim nations, "destroy their leaders, and convert them to Christianity." >> Jerry Falwell's assertion that this is god's punishment for allowing the ACLU and pro-choice groups free reign in society was also particularly monstrous. From now on, anyone who wants to know why I am so cynical about religion will be pointed to his speech. <<I'm with Joe on this -- not right away, but soon, very soon -- we need to examine just why the US draws so much ire. Part of this should be to look at how our attempts to control, support and/or subvert foreign governments have bitten us in the asses so frequently. The CIA trained Afghan rebels against the Soviets -- including what's now the Taliban and Bin Laden. We propped up Saddam Hussein when he went to war with Iran. Our problems with Iran stemmed in part from the fact that we supported the oppressive Shah for 30 years. >> True enough. But the issue is no longer the practical concern of preventing such an attack; it's now a point of giving in to violence, or showing that we will not do so. It would send a horrifically wrong message if we were to pull out of Israel in response to this. We cannot allow terrorist attempts at intimidating policy to accomplish their goals. --M.W.
