Edmund--
When Iowa first proposed This
Tournament Goes To 11, the initial scoring system was
similar (for winning X points to Y, a team would earn 3
points for the win, plus the lesser of X over Y, or 8
points).
Unfortunately, the problem with your proposal is the *same*
fundamental problem that this system had:
Case A:
40-5
Absolute differential = 35/45 = 0.7777
Case B:
300-50
Absolute differential = 250/350 = 0.7143
I don't
think you'll find many people who, if forced to pick
one of these two as the "better" win, who'd pick A
over B.
If you want to control for packet
difficulty, perhaps a better denominator would be the average
score per team on that packet?
As an example,
for the 3-way circle at E-BOWL-A, using
(differential)/(avg. per round) would yield:
UK: 40/169.5 -
10/163.0 = +0.1746,
Mich: 10/163.0 - 25/175.5 =
-0.0811, and
Pitt: 25/175.5 - 40/169.5 =
-0.0935.
