I certainly don't argue with the fact that buzzer speed is a critical part of the game of qb. I helped to get Buzzerpalooza (mirror of Maryland Fall Classic) after all. Buzzer speed is very important, and that's why we do Buzzerpalooza... because speed is very critical in game play. (Which is why I have been trying to get you DCD folks to our CWRU tournaments for years.) Then again, you have to remember, coaches also take pride in playing the game. There are a lot of coaches out there who for whatever reason do not like the buzzer concept of locking out teams because they feel that the lack of activity by their team results in a disproportionate emphasis on speed rather than knowledge. Should not the score reflect what the kids know? That's why there are so many ways to play the game; some ways go for speed and one-line zingers, others for depth with longer tossups and bonuses, and others go for teamwork and team knowledge as in a worksheet. Again, I didn't come into quiz bowl through a normal route, so I'm used to playing on tests to win a team competition (Decathlon, Math comps, French comps, and other things). I suppose as a result, my view of "academic competition" is broader than the average bear... and perhaps it's a more twisted perspective as well... :)
