Ten teams competed at Duke University for the Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament. House teams from Duke and UNC were dropped for final playoff standings. However, team members from UNC's B team filled some available slots on other teams in the bottom bracket. Teams played a full round robin, with the top 4 playing a second group round robin, and the bottom 4 their own group RR. Caveat: The first 6 prelim rounds were played untimed with 24-question matches. The remainder were played with 20-question matches due to time constraints. (1) Virginia (12-0) (2) Maryland A (8-4) (3) Emory A (7-5) (4) Emory B (6-6) (5) South Carolina (7-5) (6) North Carolina A (7-5) (7) North Carolina B (2-7) (8) Maryland B (2-10) (9) Wofford (0-12) The Duke team in 9 games finished 6-3, with losses counted for all teams in contention. Awards were given to the top 4 scorers based on preliminary round data. The following is overall individual statistics for the top 10, though I will try to calculate a points per tossups heard calculation later. Duke players were ineligible for all-star consideration. Steve Perry (Virginia) 87-10 (12 rounds): 68.33 PPG Darren Abernethy (Duke) 19-5 (4): 41.25 Eric Douglas (South Carolina) 53-13 (12): 38.75 Maureen Smith (Maryland A) 45-7 (12): 34.58 Charles Tao (Duke) 34-7 (9): 33.89 Andy Hu (Maryland A) 38-3 (12): 30.42 Jake (Emory A) 38-10 (12): 27.50 Grayson Holmes (UNC A) 44-22 (12): 27.50 Dave (NC B/playoff SC) 31-7 (11): 25.00 Peter Clericuzio (Emory B) 31-2 (12): 25.00 The all-stars were Steve Perry (Jason Williams jersey), Eric Douglas (Mike Dunleavy), Maureen Smith (Carlos Boozer), and Andy Hu (Chris Duhon). To say the least, the defacing of the Duke jerseys by Maryland players was amusing; the pictures I hope to upload tonight won't do it enough justice. Lord of the Negfives: Grayson Holmes UNC A (20 in 9 prelim matches) receives a box of WWF Band-Aids (circa early 1999 according to Andy, who did NOT purchase this prize). Golden Chicken (highest tossups with no negs) Peter Clericuzio (Emory B) 25-0 in 9 games. He received the Musical Cats 2002 calendar I got from my family for Christmas at Thanksgiving. Another note: To my knowledge, this may be the first instance of a TD having car problems when going to his own tournament. My car decided to have battery problems and finally died last night after I made the midnight run to Kinko's. So despite having around 3 hours of sleep and having to walk with a lot of stuff over to the tournament building... everything seemed to go okay in the overall scope. Thank you to all the teams who were patient with me today, and I hope that we can do this again soon!
