Although I'm no longer involved with the Academic Team at Emory U., I realize how much of a pain this is to everyone in the circuit. During my administration, I became pretty chummy with the SGA/College Council types at my school (which is easier to do at a smaller school) and had our team support candidates at our school + told others (friends at school and those we knew weren't going to vote otherwise) to vote for these candidates. Also, when we submitted our budget, we wrote as specifically as possible all our accomplishments for the past couple of years, our improvement, and our contributions to the school (co-sponsoring activities with other groups at school, putting on HS tournaments, or just anything promoting the school...basically anything to look good and get in their good graces)in addition to what we put down as needed for our budget. We usually get around $1500 for copies, questions, tournament fees, gas money, and whatever we specifically designate as needed (various reimbursements). We also present what we've done with the current year's budget this year and they like it when we spend everything because it shows we actually used what we asked for. Because of that, we've been able to gradually increase our budget in subsequent years as the Emory team restarted about 4-5 years ago from $800 to $1500+. A last thing...our school offers supplemental funding in addition to our budget. For Penn Bowl, I believe, we got an extra $1000 by submitting a bill demonstrating a variety of things like who our competition is at Penn Bowl (the SGA here likes for Emory to be represented well against the Ivies and other prestigious schools) and where we'll be spending our money (plane tickets, transportation, hotel costs, etc.). If you'd like a copy of a bill we've written, e-mail me at cepae_at_... I hope this helps in some way to someone. Chris Pae Former Emory University Academic Team President/Member
