The campus of the University of North Texas saw a revival of the old Southwest Conference during today's CBI Region 12 playoffs, as the Longhorns of Texas defeated Texas A&M in a late-bracket match to earn the top seed from bracket B, while Texas Tech edged out Rice 175-160 in a replay match to see who would join the Razorbacks from bracket A. The double-elimination playoffs saw the following occur: Round 1: Dargan Ware nails a sudden-death tossup to defeat Texas A&M after the Hogs tie the game in the waning seconds of regulation. Meanwhile, UT wins a close match against Tech (210-185, IIRC) Round 2: A&M eliminates Tech 210-170 through steady play and taking advantage of defensive opportunties. Meanwhile, Arkansas advances in the winner's bracket, setting up UT/A&M in Round 3. Round 3: A&M beats Texas to advance to the championship series. Round 4: After a very close first half, Arkanasas dominates the final 8 minutes, earning the opportunity to go to K-State. Brief comments: Kudos to Shannon Murphy for her work with this tournament, and to the host institution, the University of North Texas, who also fielded a very competitive team, going 6-3 in their bracket for a very impressive quizbowl debut. I didn't get to read for every team, but on the whole, I was impressed by the level of player sportsmanship and enthusiasm exhibited in the room where I was reading. I must say that it was fun to read in a room with actual cheering fans(we just needed the bands and the large signs) Brian
