In Hanson's defense (even though I know him not at all), I looked at
the list and found it to be tilted toward acts or songs that are Very
Current and thus haven't really become Major or Kitschy yet. I
counted a bunch of examples of this:
Starsailor, Natalie Imbruglia's new one, Nelly Furtado's new one,
System of a Down, John Mayer, P.O.D., Grandaddy, Michelle Branch, The
Strokes, Jimmy Eat World, Mary J.'s new one, Shakira, Kylie Minogue,
Lifehouse, Pink (that one was pretty tough), Alanis' new one, Puddle
of Mudd, Ryan Adams.
That's 18 of 80, about 1/4, that are sincerely new tracks on the
radio here in the states, some more obviously than others. This is
not really a bad thing. I'd contend that it's at least as fair to
test people on knowledge of current music as it is to test them on
knowledge of the sixth most important song by Supertramp. It was a
pretty hardcore round by my standards, but it didn't deserved to be
trashed like that.
