The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance hosted the 2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 4, 2017 at William Woods University in Fulton under the direction of Jeffrey Hill and Matt Chadbourne. Thirty teams from twenty schools participated. The twelve schools eligible for the small school title tied the most small school teams in tournament history to date. After playing off a three way tie, Washington A won the tournament, with St. Joseph Central taking second and Washington B finishing third. Hallsville A claimed the small school title for the fifth consecutive year, finishing eighth overall.

Teams

Teams marked with * were eligible for the small school title

Format

The tournament used NAQT IS-166 in the untimed twenty tossup/bonus format with NAQT scoring and non-rebounding bonuses. Some gameplay rules were required to match MSHSAA rules, most notably that players had to be recognized by name before providing an answer to a tossup.

The teams were divided into two pools of 8 and two pools of 7 for preliminary rounds 1-7.

The top 2 teams in each pool advanced to the championship tier, remaining eligible to win the tournament. The third place teams advanced to Consolation 1, the fourth place teams to Consolation 2, the fifth place teams to Consolation 3, the sixth place teams to Consolation 4, and the remaining teams to Consolation 5. Each consolation pool of four teams played a round robin in rounds 8-10, while the six team Consolation 5 pool played a partial round robin in rounds 8-10.

In the championship tier, two roughly equal pools were seeded based on the points per bonus of the top team from each preliminary pool, with the corresponding second place teams advancing to the same pool. This resulted in two parallel pools consisting of the first and second place teams from two of the four pools. Each of these pools played a crossover playoff, with games in rounds 8-9 and one preliminary game carrying over. After round 9, the top 2 teams in each pool based on playoff record, then greatest average points per game, advanced to a crossover superplayoff for rounds 10-11, followed by any necessary finals and tiebreakers in rounds 12-13. The remaining championship teams played the team of the same rank from the other pool in a round 10 placement game to determine 5th-8th place.

Results

Following round 9, the championship tier results were:

Bernard Weitzman

  • 1. Washington A 3-0, 463.3 ppg
  • 2. Rock Bridge B 1-2, 220.0 ppg
  • 3. Savannah 1-2, 211.7 ppg
  • 4. Rolla 1-2, 136.7 ppg

William Woods

  • 1. Washington B 3-0, 300.0 ppg
  • 2. St. Joseph Central 2-1, 358.3 ppg
  • 3. Rock Bridge A 1-2, 258.3 ppg
  • 4. Hallsville A 0-3, 146.7 ppg

Following round 11, Washington A, Central, and Washington B were tied at 2-1; Rock Bridge B was 0-3 and took home fourth place. The three tied teams were seeded based on superplayoff points per game to play a two stage final. Central won the play-in game 320-200 over Washington B to give Washington B 3rd place. Central advanced to play Washington A in the championship game, which Washington A won 410-220 to take home the 2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier title!

For the small school title, Hallsville A finished in eighth place overall and Louisiana finished in eleventh place. The separation of only three places resulted in an advantaged final between Hallsville and Louisiana, with Hallsville holding the advantage. Hallsville won the first game of the final 285-115 to claim their fifth consecutive NAQT Missouri Qualifier small school title!

Sophie Lockwood of Hallsville A was the top scorer with an average of 96.43 points per game in the preliminary rounds and 80.45 points per game overall.
