"But here's an interesting list of schools that you'll soon see on the QB-list: Hopkins, GW, George Mason, Georgetown, UMBC. What do they have in common? They're all within an hour's drive of College Park, and yet they didn't show up. Perhaps George Mason is a different case than the others; after all, if one man can't make it, then there isn't a team to send (as far as I know). But the other four are inexcusable. When was the last time one of them held an academic tournament not attended by Maryland?" I graduated from Georgetown in 1998, and do not speak for them. However, when I was at Georgetown, the Terrapin was not free. The Terrapin is also well-known for hard ACF. I would have had to spend my day, answering questions on topics that I didn't find enjoyable, and paying for the privilege. Perhaps if UMCP ran an NAQT-style event, Georgetown may have attended in my years there. Maryland's criticisms are especially invalid considering the fact that CBI Regionals were held at PGCC in 1997 and yet the team did not show up. Maryland has a diverse team (TRASH, NAQT, ACF), and so it appears that UMCP would attend such a variety of tournaments. Other teams are not as diversified and should not be attacked because of it. Please do not associate me with a school when I make these remarks, but a school holds no obligation to attend a local tournament if it does not have the interest to do so.
