In light of recent discussion concerning the ACF Regional at USF, last night at our novice practice I asked the members of Florida B and C (combined 5-19) what they thought of the tournament. To a person, they thought the questions were fine, even if they didn't yet know all the answers, and were grateful for the experience they gained - especially in light of the Novice Tournament most of them will be attending in a couple of weeks. As a moderator, I thought the questions were excellent and were considerably more accessible than ACF regionals of years past. I had the opportunity to see every team except UNF in my room and all seemed to be having a good time - including New College. As to the "dinosaur" stereotype, UCF (Borglum and Co.) played as an exhibition team, as did Mike Musgrove. Among other older players, Nathan and Raj have only been actively playing for a few years, if I'm not mistaken, and are two of the more pleasant gentlemen to read for and Florida A's only grad student wasn't our top scorer. Regarding ACF's efforts to attract more younger players/teams, other than providing accessible and well-edited questions (which was done), I believe that the efforts must lie with the individual hosts. Charlie has repeatedly had success at UTC by offering discounts and more prizes. It may take time, but I think these approaches would be successful elsewhere. Finally, we're still anxiously awaiting the ACF South results through all 13 rounds and, incidentally, also last spring's post-Sun N Fun Trash Tourney (<a href=http://ctr.usf.edu/quizbowl/sun-n-fun-2001-results.htm target=new>http://ctr.usf.edu/quizbowl/sun-n-fun-2001-results.htm</a> still promises "Coming Soon") -Daniel Nordby Communications Director, UF College Bowl
